THE KNAPPENBERGERS IN MAINE

One of our favorite travel destinations is the state of Maine.  Each time we visit (which is usually at least once a year), we discover new reasons to love it.  Southern Maine (including Wells, Ogunquit, Perkins Cove, The Yorks, and Kittery) is where we began our exploration of the state and we've ventured north to various places including Freeport, Boothbay Harbor, Camden, Bar Harbor (and many of the towns on Mount Desert Island), and Greenville.

NEW!!

In October 1999, we spent a few days in Bar Harbor and then a few more on Cape Cod (new to us).  In Bar Harbor, we visited some of our favorite haunts, plus tried some new trails.  We had our mountain bikes along on this trip, so we could cover more ground.  One of our rides was circling Eagle Lake, which had some nice views (below).

We also returned to the top of Cadillac Mountain for sunset (above), but were once again unsuccessful at catching the sunrise.  We made the trek once this trip, only to have clouds/fog roll in just before sunrise.  On this trip, we had somewhat of a family reunion, since Doug and Kay Knappenberger as well as "Babby" and Jack Dreisbach were all in Bar Harbor on the same weekend!

In October 1998, we spent several days in Bar Harbor touring Acadia National Park. Although it rained all but one day, we had fun exploring some new trails and even attended the "Oktoberfest" microbrew sampling event in Southwest Harbor.  One of our discoveries (thanks to the innkeepers of the Black Friar Inn) this time was Hunter's Beach.  The trail to get there is only about 1/4 mile and it is fairly secluded since it is not accessible from the Park Loop road (you have to take Route 3 instead), nor is it well marked from the road.  Pictures of it are shown below.

Another hiking adventure took us to the Witch Hole carriage trail where we enjoyed some stunning fall foliage and even saw a beaver (although he moved too quickly for us to get a picture to prove it!).  Below is a photo from one of the bridges to get to the carriage road.

In May 1996, we spent time in Bar Harbor, Greenville (at the southern tip of Moosehead Lake), and made our obligatory stop at Nubble Light.  One of the less-visited lighthouses that we have been to is Bass Harbor Head Light, which is located south of Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island. We're not sure if you can still climb on the rocks as we did to get this photo (below), but it's worth a visit anyway.

In Greenville, we took a flightseeing trip over the lake and all the way up to Mount Katahdin (above), where the Appalachian trail ends (or begins, I guess).  We also did some moose hunting (armed with cameras) at dusk and drove down Route 201 from Jackman, commonly called "Moose Alley".  We've heard good things about The Lodge at Moosehead Lake and will probably try to stay there if and when we return to this region.

Finally, I have to include a photo of Nubble Light (aka Cape Neddick Light), since we stop there on almost every trip, including once in October 1996 when a Nor'easter was storming up the coast.
