| Travels on Cape Cod, October 1999 |
We visited Cape Cod for the first time in October, after spending a few days in Maine. During our stay, we went whale-watching, hiked on the dunes of Great Island, and enjoyed some great food.
Our whale-watching experience was nice, especially because we took one of the less-advertised whale watches, the Cape Cod Whale Watch, out of Provincetown. Our boat was not crowded at all, so everyone could easily move to whichever side of the boat the whales were on. Greg took some great photos, including a close-up of a humpback's blowhole (below)!

Other than our whale watch, we spent most of our time exploring the National Seashore with its many dunes and lighthouses. We took a nice hike on Great Island (actually a peninsula) after enjoying a meal in Wellfleet (including some oyster stew with Wellfleet's renowned oysters). We got tired quickly, though, from hiking in sand and getting blown by the strong winds coming off the Cape Cod and Wellfleet bays. One of the nicest lighthouses was Nauset Light, on the outer cape (below), which was easily accessible by car.
One of the most memorable restaurants was The Red Pheasant (postcard below), a fine dining establishment in a renovated barn. It is in Dennis Village, in the Mid-Cape region, and specializes in game meats. We ate there twice during our 3-day stay and had ostrich, duck, rack of lamb, and salmon entrees which were excellent! In the future, we would spend a night at the Scargo Manor, a bed and breakfast next door to the restaurant, so that we could enjoy the restaurant's extensive wine list.
