Our
Visit to ALASKA
!![]() |
We went to Alaska from September
4th through 19th, 2000! We flew into Anchorage, rented a car, and drove
to Denali National Park for a few days of sightseeing (we saw lots of grizzlies
and caribou but did not see the top of Mt. McKinley)!

We then went to Fairbanks for another few days, where we took a tour to the Arctic Circle and visited the Nanamuit Inupiat (Eskimo) village of Anaktuvuk Pass. We also visited the Chena Hot Springs Resort and took a horseback trail ride that was quite an adventure.
After that, we drove to Valdez, with a little pitstop at the edge of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park along the way.

From Valdez, we took a day cruise on the Prince William Sound, then head back towards Anchorage. We spent two nights in Seward and took a cruise to see the Kenai Fjords.

Finally, we returned to Anchorage for a relaxing end to our trip and we had perfectly clear, blue skies with a view of Mt. McKinley (finally!) and took a flightseeing tour around it that included a landing on Whistler glacier.

Here are some links to the
webpages for some of the places we stayed and some of the websites that were
particularly useful for planning our trip.
We stayed at the Alaska Chalet in Eagle River (just north of Anchorage) for our first night. Brigitte was a helpful hostess and the price was right! We paid only $65 for the suite since it is off-season. Visit their website at www.alaskachaletbb.com.
The next three nights were spent at the Touch of Wilderness Bed and Breakfast (www.touchofwildernessbb.com) in Healy, which is only about 12 miles north of the entrance to Denali National Park. Again, we got off season rates plus a multi-night discount!
In Fairbanks, we stayed at the Crestmont Manor, another B&B that served fantastic meals. Their website is http://www.mosquitonet.com/~crestmnt .
--Find out about bargains at www.toursaver.com. This is like an entertainment book, but has all sorts of day cruises, kayaking trips, flightseeing, etc. -- all buy one get one free (or 50% off) with coupon. The only drawback is that it costs $99, so you need to plan to use at least one of the more expensive tours to make it worthwhile.
